Is VW the Right Kind of Sponsor for Major League Soccer
5/7/2010
Volkswagen's actions in building its plant in Chattanooga make it a less-than-desirable match for Major League Soccer's values
Volkswage is a primary corporate sponsor for Major League Soccer (MLS). MLS has a Community Service Program called MLS W.O.R.K.S. And, according to the MLS website, MLS W.O.R.K.S. is…”designed to galvanize the entire soccer community including MLS clubs, players, supporters groups, fans, ownership groups and corporate and media partners to participate in a collaborative effort to combine sport and service, promote goodwill within MLS markets and improve lives and communities at the grassroots level.”
Hmmm. How does fleecing Tennessee taxpayers for $500 million, and then not agreeing to a "local hire" provision, and then out-sourcing hundreds of construction jobs to out-of-state and foreign workers constitute "improved lives and communities at the grassroots level?"
VW’s actions in Tennessee is wholly inconsistent with the value structure of Major League Soccer. MLS needs to re-evalute that relationship.
And Volunteers For Local Hire intends to bring that message to the MLS. Stay tuned....
